Festivals and Holidays in Thailand in January
In Thailand, throughout the year, there are international, national, and religious holidays. Besides these, each of Thailand’s 72 provinces has its own local festivals.
Often, holidays are tied to days of the week or lunar phases.
The second Saturday of January — Children’s Day
Unlike the International Children’s Day celebrated on June 1st, in Thailand, Children’s Day is observed on the second Saturday of January. Children are considered the country’s most valuable resource. Many Thais believe that children are the future of the nation; if children grow up educated and cultured, the country will prosper.
Children’s Day was established to raise awareness among every Thai about the crucial role children play in the country. The holiday was first celebrated as National Children’s Day on the first Monday of October in 1955. Until 1963, Children’s Day was observed in October, but then the date was moved to the second Saturday of January.
In Thailand, as in probably any civilized country, the attitude towards children is full of tender admiration, indescribable in words. Therefore, the holiday dedicated to children always brings joy and fun. Many organizations hold festive events for children of all ages on this day. It is pleasing that almost all entertainment is available either free or at half price. Any celebration in Thailand is accompanied by colorful carnivals, parades, or festivals depending on the event it is dedicated to. Children’s Day in Phuket is no exception. The holiday spills over the city streets, turning it into a magical land. Nationwide, charity concerts for children, school performances, carnival parades, fireworks, and street fairs are held on this day.
